Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich signs new contract through to 2029

Joshua Kimmich has signed a new contract with Bayern Munich through to 2029.

The Germany international, 30, has agreed fresh terms on a new four-year contract with the Bundesliga giants.

The Athletic reported in January a new deal for Kimmich was a priority for Bayern with his previous contract set to expire in June.

Now he has officially followed in the footsteps of Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies and Manuel Neuer in inking a new deal with the club in recent months.

“He’s someone who always leads the way, whether at the club or as Germany captain,” Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said.

“His hunger is undiminished, as was evident again in the Champions League round of 16. His determination and commitment embody what FC Bayern stands for. He should build a bridge between our current generation and a new era.”

Kimmich joined Bayern from RB Leipzig in 2015 and has gone on to 429 appearances for the club, scoring 43 goals and adding 114 assists.

He has been part of eight Bundesliga title-winning sides during his time with Bayern and was also part of the team that won the Champions League in 2020.

He was named Germany captain in September after Ilkay Gundogan’s international retirement. He has played 97 times for his country,

Bayern — top of the Bundesliga — are next in action against Union Berlin on Saturday.

Kimmich’s extension is a positive for Bayern and Kompany

This is a positive for Bayern several ways.

Having been at the club since 2015, won the Champions League in 2020, as well as fistfuls of domestic trophies in that near-decade, Kimmich has a natural gravity within Vincent Kompany’s squad.

Manuel Neuer signed a contract extension in January until 2025, but Kimmich will eventually be his successor as Bayern’s captain — that has already been made clear.

That feels important. Increasingly, the team is getting younger and will become more dependent on players of a new generation. Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise, Alphonso Davies and Aleksandar Pavlovic are already highly prominent and Kimmich, as a senior, anchoring figure, provides a dash of seniority.

But he is also playing extremely well. Kimmich was restored to midfield this season, having largely played as a right-back under Thomas Tuchel, and has been largely excellent.

His midfield spot will come under increasing pressure over those three years. Pavlovic is a growing force, Joao Palhinha and Konrad Laimer are younger options, and Leon Goretzka is still at the club (for now). TSG Hoffenheim’s highly-rated Tom Bischof will join the club in the summer, too.

But were he to have left now, Kimmich would still have left a significant gap that would have needed filling; how many players of his class and experience are available at any given time — and for what kind of fees.

So, Bayern have their continuity and are able to retain an important senior figure.

Kimmich, despite the allure of other leagues, will continue to occupy a place of reverence in the squad and will soon inherit the armband. It’s a sensible outcome for everyone.
