Breanna Stewart returning to Liberty as New York inks 2-time WNBA MVP to new deal

Two-time WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart is returning to the New York Liberty, the team announced Saturday. The terms of the deal were not announced.

News of Stewart returning to New York is no surprise, as the 6-foot-4 forward finally inking a deal comes at the end of the Liberty finishing the rest of their offseason maneuvering. Earlier this month, New York acquired three-time all-defensive team guard Natasha Cloud via a trade with the Connecticut Sun. Last Friday, they re-signed French guard Marine Johannès after the 5-foot-10 combo guard elected not to play in the WNBA last season in order to compete for France in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“Bringing Stewie back to the Liberty was our top priority this offseason,” Liberty general manager Jonathan Kolb said in a statement. “Her impact on and off the court is immeasurable—she’s not only one of the best and most accomplished players in the world, but a leader whose relentless drive is foundational to the standard we continue to build upon in New York.”

Stewart joined the Liberty ahead of the 2023 season and helped lead New York to the WNBA Finals in 2023 and the franchise’s first championship in 2024. The Liberty defeated the Minnesota Lynx in five games last October in a thrilling five-game finals.

The Liberty have showcased Stewart throughout New York’s offseason promotion, including most recently when the team announced plans to build a new $80 million, 75,000-square-foot practice facility in Brooklyn.

The Liberty open their title defense on May 17 against the Las Vegas Aces.
