Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler arrested and charged with DUI, gun possession in Tennessee: Reports

Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and possession of a handgun in Franklin, Tenn. on Thursday, according to multiple reports. He was released after posting a $5,000 bond, per the reports.

Cutler was also charged with failure to exercise due care to avoid a collision and violating implied consent, according to the reports. All of the charges against the 41-year-old are either misdemeanors or civil offenses, according to Tennessee state law.

The police responded to a report of Cutler rear-ending another car Thursday evening, prompting the officers to question him. Police said Cutler smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and was slurring his words.

After refusing a field sobriety test, police obtained a search warrant and took Cutler to a nearby hospital to have his blood alcohol level tested. Police found a loaded pistol and another firearm in Cutler’s car.

Cutler played 12 seasons in the NFL with the Denver Broncos, Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins. The Broncos selected Cutler with the No. 11 pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. The Vanderbilt product spent his first three seasons with the Broncos before playing eight years with the Bears. Cutler retired after one season with the Dolphins in 2017.

His lone Pro Bowl season came in 2008, his final year in Denver, throwing for a career-high 4,526 passing yards. Cutler finished with 25 passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns and 18 interceptions that season.
