Joshua Zirzkee out for the season but Amad could return for Manchester United this season

Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee will miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season due to a hamstring injury.

Zirkzee, 23, was substituted in the 55th minute of his side’s 4-1 loss against Newcastle United on Sunday after going down with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. He was replaced by Rasmus Hojlund.

United head coach Ruben Amorim said after the game that he expected Zirkzee to be out for “some games”.

“Joshua is out for the season, so is not going to play more this season, let’s prepare him for the next one,” Amorim then confirmed at a news conference on Wednesday.

Zirzkee has scored seven goals and provided three assists in 48 games for United this season, and netted in the Europa League away ties at Real Sociedad and Lyon.

The Netherlands international joined United from Italian side Bologna in July in a deal worth €42.5million (£36.7m; $48.1m), signing a five-year contract with an option for a further 12 months. He finished the 2023-24 season as Bologna’s top scorer with 11 goals and five assists, helping the team qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 60 years.

On Amad, who sustained a serious ankle injury in February but was doing individual training at Carrington on Wednesday, Amorim added: “This month, he’s not ready but we hope to have Amad still this season.”

Elsewhere, Amorim confirmed that goalkeeper Andre Onana will be restored to the starting line-up for Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon at Old Trafford. United draw 2-2 in France last Thursday with Onana taking the blame for both of Lyon’s goals, before being left out of the squad which lost at Newcastle at the weekend.
