Though starting pitcher Luis Severino loves playing in New York, it’s likely that he declines the qualifying offer from the Mets, a league source said, in favor of trying to land a multiyear deal.
The deadline for players to decide on qualifying offers is Tuesday. The Mets issued one to Pete Alonso, Sean Manaea and Severino, who seemed like the only one who would at least consider it. With Severino, Manaea and Jose Quintana all free agents, the Mets have multiple openings in their starting rotation to fill. All three pitchers gave New York varying levels of stability, with the trio performing especially well in the second half.
After injuries halted what was a promising career with the New York Yankees, Severino bounced back with the Mets after signing a one-year deal worth $13 million. In 2024, he made 31 starts (182 innings) and had a 3.91 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 161 strikeouts. Severino, who’ll turn 31 in February, also had a 3.24 ERA over three postseason starts for the Mets.
The qualifying offer is set for one season at $21.05 million. If a player declines and signs with a new team, his old team receives draft-pick compensation.
