Macy’s Staging an Indoor Version of New York’s Outdoor Holiday Markets

Macy’s Herald Square has a new format for Christmas shopping — an indoor version of those holiday markets that take over Manhattan’s Bryant Park, Union Square and Columbus Circle each year.

Macy’s “Holiday Square by Urbanspace” won’t be quite as sprawling, but it will occupy a total of 3,000 square feet in the flagship, across the mezzanine, by the elevator portals and on the ninth floor. More than 50 businesses will set up stalls selling gifts, food and beverages including stroopwafels from Amsterdam, handcrafted chocolates from Italy, Crumbl Cookies, personalized ornaments, jewelry, handmade stationery, candles and decorative accessories, among other holiday-oriented products.

Urbanspace is the creator of the Holiday Shops at Bryant Park Winter Village, Union Square Holiday Market and Columbus Circle Holiday Market. These markets typically feature gourmet foods, unique and handcrafted items, lots of jewelry, cold weather accessories, toys, games, candles, candy, ornaments and a few bargains.

Macy’s “Holiday Square by Urbanspace” will run from Nov. 1 through Jan. 3. The installation will have a digital holiday activation map with QR codes to learn about the vendors.

In addition, Macy’s will have a shop at The Holiday Shops at Bryant Park in one of the glass booths on Sixth Avenue from Oct. 25 to Jan. 5. The Macy’s shop will be housed in a 10-foot by 20-foot booth and sell Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade products as well as cashmere, fragrances, and other gifts.

“This year we are excited about the newness and exclusive products across categories from a curation of great brands that will inspire our customers,” said Nata Dvir, Macy’s chief merchandising officer. “This holiday, we have elevated fashion and trends that bring holiday celebrations to life through our exciting new partnerships and unique store experiences.”

Sharon Otterman, Macy’s chief marketing officer, added, “We’ll immerse our customers in engaging, inclusive experiences online and in-stores — experiences that they’ll be inspired by.”

Macy’s Santaland will be back again, at Macy’s on State Street in Chicago beginning Nov. 2, and at Macy’s Herald Square, Macy’s Center City in Philadelphia and Macy’s Union Square in San Francisco beginning Nov. 29. Reservations can be made at macys.com/Santaland.

Macy’s Great Tree, Christmas Light Show and Dickens Village will be at Macy’s on State Street and at Macy’s Union Square.  At Macy’s Center City in Philadelphia, the Dickens Village and Christmas Light Show returns Nov. 29. Macy’s also creates Christmas window displays, and is said to be the first department store to do that.

From Nov. 1 through Dec. 24, Macy’s will campaign to support the Big Brother Big Sister mentoring organization by collection donations in-store and online. At the Macy’s stores, shoppers can round off their purchases to the next dollar to give a donation. For example, if someone spends $40.70 on an item, the customer can round off the price to $41, donating 30 cents to the cause.
