Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona both entered their respective Champions League quarter-final second legs on Tuesday having more than taken care of business at home.
PSG had beaten Aston Villa 3-1 at Parc des Princes while Barcelona had hammered Borussia Dortmund 4-0 in Catalonia.
PSG initially appeared to have the tie well in hand as early goals from Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes made it 5-1 on aggregate at Villa Park.
But Youri Tielemans clawed one back for Villa shortly after, and then the home supporters roared to life in the second half after quick-fire goals from John McGinn and Ezri Konsa.
An unforgettable comeback was not to be, as PSG weathered the storm to hang on for a 5-4 win on aggregate and dash the hopes of Villa supporters in attendance, including Prince William and Prince George.
Meanwhile in Germany, a Serhou Guirassy hat-trick was not enough to help Dortmund overturn the first-leg deficit. A Ramy Bensebaini own goal in the second half left with them too much to do against Hansi Flick’s men.
- Dortmund 3-1 Barcelona, 3-5 agg. (Guirassy x3; Bensebaini OG)
- Aston Villa 3-2 PSG, 4-5 agg. (Tielemans, McGinn, Konsa; Hakimi, Mendes)
