Michael Urie Gives His Gender-bending 2019 Met Gala Look a ‘Wicked’ Twist With Help From Christian Siriano for the 2025 GLAAD Media Awards

Michael Urie had a “wicked” night. The “Shrinking” actor hosted the 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards on Thursday in Los Angeles, wearing a Christian Siriano-designed outfit inspired by both Urie’s 2019 Met Gala look and the Jon M. Chu blockbuster musical.

“I love ‘Wicked’ and I love pink and green more than ever because of it — they got me hook, line and sinker,” Urie told WWD.

The actor came up with the idea of wearing a “Wicked”-inspired look with his stylist, Michael Fuso. The duo wanted to create something special for Urie’s first entrance and pay tribute to Cynthia Erivo, who stars in the movie and was honored at the GLAAD Awards with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award for her efforts in enhancing visibility and fostering acceptance of LGBTQIA+ individuals and issues.

The outfit featured a half-and-half design with a shimmering pink and emerald green color scheme, nodding to “Wicked” characters Glinda and Elphaba. The top half was a tailored suit jacket transitioning into a flowing ball gown-style skirt.

“I think we wanted this look to have the feeling of both characters from the film, but still a cool, fashionable look for Michael that felt masculine and modern. It was even fun to play around with the idea of all the great red carpet moments that Ariana [Grande] and Cynthia had and to give a nod to that as well with this look,” Siriano told WWD.

The garment created a striking visual effect of blending traditionally masculine and feminine fashion elements, just like Urie’s 2019 Met Gala look, which Siriano also designed.

“I wouldn’t have thought of an Elphaba/Glinda suit if he hadn’t created the original femme/masc suit. It’s an homage and somewhat of a sequel,” Urie said. “Met was this camp idea that Michael could be his own prom date, which I loved. You can be masculine and feminine at the same time and gender has no signature. Clothes should be a fun form of expression, and there are no rules, and there never should be. Wear what you want to wear and be who you want to be. Fashion should only help that,” Siriano said.

For Urie, the collaboration with Siriano and the nod to “Wicked” fit “perfectly” with the GLAAD Media Awards mission. Established in 1990, the event has become the most prominent annual LGBTQIA+ awards event worldwide, delivering impactful messages of acceptance to global audiences.

“Each and every one of us in the LGBTQIA community is perfect as we are, just like Elphaba. GLAAD is about representation and visibility in the media. Fashion fits in perfectly. Christian, ‘Wicked’ and Cynthia all embody that too, so what better way to celebrate all of it than a big bold lewk to start off the night,” Urie said.
