Nebraska tight end Arik Gilbert was arrested on smash and grab burglary and obstruction of officers charges in Georgia on Friday, per Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office arrest records.
The arrest comes less than three weeks after the 21-year-old was arrested and jailed in Lincoln, Neb., on Aug. 29 after police said he burglarized a vape shop.
In the August arrest, Lincoln police apprehended Gilbert shortly before 2 a.m. local time at SJ’s Liquor and Vape Shop. He was carrying a bag that contained $1,672 in vape products, Delta 8, cigars and lighters, according to police. Gilbert was taken into custody without incident and cited for burglary, a felony.
A former five-star recruiting prospect, Gilbert transferred to Nebraska in January after he spent two seasons at Georgia and one at LSU. The NCAA has yet to rule on Gilbert’s waiver to seek immediate eligibility at Nebraska as a two-time transfer. Gilbert continued to practice with the Huskers in August before his arrest in Lincoln. He is still listed on the Nebraska roster.
Nebraska coach Matt Rhule has made no public comments about Gilbert since the day of his arrest in August, when he said the school would determine his status moving ahead.
Gilbert played sparingly in 2022 at Georgia as personal issues limited his availability. He enjoyed a breakout true freshman season at LSU in 2020, catching 35 passes for 368 yards. In 2019, he was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year at Marietta (Ga.) High School.
