Newcastle United have confirmed that left-back Lewis Hall will be sidelined for the rest of the season with a foot injury that requires surgery.
Hall sustained the injury during Newcastle’s 2-0 Premier League defeat by Liverpool on February 26 but completed the full game.
The 20-year-old was subsequently left out of the squad for his side’s 2-1 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup fifth round on Sunday, with Tino Livramento moving over from right-back in his place.
“Following a scan and advice from a specialist, Lewis will undergo surgery before a period of rehabilitation with the club’s medical team,” the club said on social media.
Hall has been a staple of Eddie Howe’s side this season, appearing in 34 games this season in all competitions and providing five assists.
The Englishman joined Newcastle from Chelsea in August 2023 in a loan deal that contained an obligation to buy for around £28million ($35.9m) if certain conditions were met. He was confirmed to have signed for the club on a permanent basis in July last year.
He has made 56 appearances for the team in total, scoring twice.
Hall was called up to the England national team for the first time in November by then-interim manager Lee Carsley and received his first two caps in Nations League games against the Republic of Ireland and Greece.
It is another blow for Newcastle ahead of the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on March 16, with Anthony Gordon set to miss the match through suspension. The winger received a straight red card against Brighton on Sunday for pushing defender Jan Paul van Hecke in the head.
Newcastle return to action with a Premier League visit to West Ham United on Monday.

An FA Cup exit and a costly suspension: Newcastle are hobbling towards Wembley
‘Newcastle deprived of one of their most consistent performers’
Analysis by Newcastle United correspondent Chris Waugh
If Hall had merely been unavailable for the Carabao Cup final, given how he did well to almost shackle Mohamed Salah at Anfield last month, this would have been a blow. But for the 20-year-old to be out for the remainder of the campaign is hugely significant.
His injury leaves Newcastle short at left-back and deprived of one of their most consistent performers throughout 2024-25.
After competing with Lloyd Kelly for the starting left-back berth for the first few weeks of the season, Hall has started each of the last 19 Premier League matches. Aside from a questionable off-the-ball performance at Manchester City, he has been excellent, marauding forward down the left flank, linking up well with Anthony Gordon, and defending resolutely.
Suddenly, having boasted England’s in-form left-back among their ranks, Newcastle look worryingly shallow down that defensive flank. Kelly’s sale to Juventus in January made financial sense, but Tino Livramento, a right-back, deputised on the left against Brighton on Sunday, while shifting Dan Burn out wide again from centre-half feels like a regressive move. Matt Targett is an out-and-out left-back, but has not started a Premier League match since September 2, 2023, and was available for transfer in January.
Gordon being absent for the final was bad enough, but now Eddie Howe will be without his two first-choice left-sided players — and must find a makeshift solution at left-back for the remainder of the season.
