Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady’s personal collection titled “The GOAT Collection: Watches and Treasures from Tom Brady” sold for a combined total of over $9 million at auction at Sotheby’s, New York.
Held on December 10 with participants from 45 countries, the auction included Brady’s Super Bowl LI playcard wristband, his 2000 NFL Combine shirt, his final college jersey and several high-end watches.
The highest-selling of the 41 items was a yellow gold Rolex Daytona ‘John Player Special,’ which had the highest presale estimate of the collection of $600,000 to $900,000, and sold for $1.14 million. Brady wore the watch when New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft told him he would be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame.
Another watch, a custom-made Audemars Piguet Royal Oak with “Tom Brady” written on its dial in diamonds had a presale estimate of $400,000 to $800,000 and was sold for $720,000. He wore the watch for Netflix’s “The Roast of Tom Brady” special.
The average sale price was $219,629, while the items sold for a combined $9.48m, surpassing the estimated $5.2 – $8.9m the lot had expected to generate. Sixty percent of items exceeded their estimated price. Brady’s collection of watches sold for a combined $4.6m, while his sports memorabilia fetched $4.4m. Sotheby’s said 800 people had registered to participate in the auction, with 40 percent of those under the age of 40.
Brady’s jersey from his last collegiate game sold for $792,000 and surpassed its estimated value of $300,000-$500,000. His final Michigan Wolverines jersey was worn in a 35-34 Orange Bowl win over Alabama. Brady threw for an NCAA career-high 369 yards and four touchdowns in the game, which included what would be a winning TD pass in overtime.
The T-shirt that Brady wore for the 2000 NFL Combine garnered a $144,000 sale. He ran a 5.28-second 40-yard dash, the slowest by a quarterback for more than a decade, before being drafted in the sixth round by the New England Patriots.
Other items sold included a helmet worn in his final game for the Patriots in 2019, sold for $102,000 after a three-way bidding battle, and a football from the game in which he surpassed 100,000 total career passing yards in 2022, which sold for $144,000. His tracksuit from the “DunKings” Super Bowl commercial, autographed by co-stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, sold for $50,400, topping the estimated value of $10,000 – $20,000.
Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s Head of Modern Collectibles, said in a statement: “It has been truly gratifying to witness the warm reception from collectors and sports fans over the past few months. Regardless of their team allegiance, collectors eagerly gathered to admire these cherished mementos from Tom’s iconic career, honoring and respecting the remarkable accomplishments of The GOAT.”
An NFL quarterback for both the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Brady retired in 2022 as the NFL’s all-time passing yards and passing touchdowns leader, with his seven Super Bowls — the most of any NFL player.
Fox signed him to a 10-year, $375 million contract as an analyst in 2022, and he has since become a minority owner of English soccer team Birmingham City. His purchase of a minority ownership stake in the Las Vegas Raiders was approved in October.
