Madison Keys (14) vs Maya Joint (Qualifier)
Madison Keys had a resounding round-one victory, defeating doubles specialist Katerina Siniakova 6-4, 6-1. Keys will look to attack Maya Joint with her serve and flat groundstrokes, which saw her reach the final in New York in 2017. It’s the first time Keys and Joint are facing each other.
Alexander Shevchenko vs Frances Tiafoe (20)
Frances Tiafoe won a tight four-setter against fellow American Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. It’s his first matchup against Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko, who won his first-round match in four sets over Dominik Koepfer.
Expect Tiafoe to rely on his big serve (he won 80 percent of his first serve points against Kovacevic), but he will also lean on the raucous home crowd against Shevchenko.
Tatjana Maria vs Coco Gauff (3)
Coco Gauff began her U.S. Open title defense with a straightforward 6-2, 6-0 victory over Varvara Gracheva. Despite winning all her service games, Gauff did face a lot of break points and recorded six double faults.
The American leads the head-to-head 1-0, having beaten Maria in Auckland in 2023. She will look to build on her serving from round one with another solid performance.
Laslo Djere vs Novak Djokovic (2)
For the second straight match, Novak Djokovic is last under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium. He had a routine win over Radu Albot, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4, in the first round, but the world No 2 had some uncharacteristic unforced errors as he acclimatised to the hard courts.
Djokovic has a 2-0 record against his compatriot Laslo Djere, which includes coming back from two sets down at last year’s U.S. Open.
