Wolves close to Sam Johnstone agreement with Crystal Palace

Wolverhampton Wanderers close to reaching an agreement with Crystal Palace to sign goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

A deal is not yet in place but the clubs are working towards compromising on a fee of around £10million ($12.7m) for the 31-year-old, while a contract that runs until 2028 has been proposed.

The Athletic reported earlier this month that Palace were prepared to sanction Johnstone’s exit after he asked to leave Selhurst Park. Leicester City, Nottingham Forest and Southampton had previously shown interest in the England international.

Johnstone’s desire to leave came with head coach Oliver Glasner preferring Dean Henderson as his No 1, with the former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper starting Palace’s first two Premier League games.

Ahead of Palace’s 2-0 home defeat by West Ham United at the weekend, Glasner confirmed Johnstone wanted to leave.

“Sam told us he wants to leave, and so if he finds a club he can leave,” Glasner said. ”That is not the best situation to get a start.”

Jose Sa has been Wolves’ first-choice goalkeeper since his arrival from Olympiacos in the summer of 2021. The 31-year-old has missed only six league games in those three seasons and made his senior Portugal debut last year.

Dan Bentley, who Arsenal made an offer for earlier this summer, is Sa’s understudy and has made seven appearances for Wolves since joining from Bristol City in 2022.
